Overworked College Students Struggle With School Finances

This case, called Bland V. Roberts, deals with an issue between Facebook and Linkedin. The issue was that employees were getting fired for liking the page of their bosse’s opponents. Six employees were fired, and sued because it disrupted their first amendment right. The supreme Court also ruled their termination unconstitutional. I think that a job’s involvment with an employees facebook shouldn’t be used against the employee, or punished for what they mention or use on a social media site because it does interfere with the first amendment right. Unless it’s harmful to the company or anyone individually, it shouldn’t be used for termination reasons.

This McDonalds ad uses the “bandwagon” technique because it is encouraging everyone to take part with them, in which they’ve served billions of people. They’re appealing to the masses who take part in their companies products.

Proactiv is a very common company that uses the “beautiful people” technique to represent their product. Proactiv is known for always using celebrities to display their “progress” with proactiv so other regular members of their audiences can look up to them and find it more believeable.

Media Ethics

Media ethics – are there any in today’s world of media? Personally, I think the ethics are becoming slimmer and slimmer with each new advancement in the world of media and technology. I feel like the world of media is one big boxing fight – everyone apart of the media is taking jabs at one another to get ahead. When I look at the media, I don’t see it as a way to inform and educate the public, but more as a business for certain products, ideas, and companies to get ahead. I don’t find our media in this day and age very ethical at all. It sad, and it’s even worse to know it’s not getting any better.

Class Highlights

Journalism 2 has definitely made me aware of the importantance of media literacy, and how it affects our daily lives. I now see the media as an important tool, but also as a weapon of manipulation. I feel like the media does more harm than good, and it’s values are more focused on the benefit of companies rather than the public. I’ve learned that the first amendment right is constantly a controversial aspect of the media in terms of if it is actually respected, or ignored. I’ve also become more aware of how media messages affects the impact of media, and how we’re living in an era where it conveys more negative behaivors and ideals rather than positive. There are so many aspects of the media that goes unnoticed or uncared for. This class has taught me how to interpret the media in a poisitive and beneficial way to my education so that my views arent misconstrued or falsified by the negative aspects of the media. I can better my education through the media after this class and will grow as a student of media literacy.

The Effect on our Youth With Male and Female Roles in Prime Time Television

From the beginning of the era of television, typical gender stereotypes were put into television shows for the world to see. Women were forced into the roles of the “housewife”, or “stay at home mom,” while the men were forced into the role of the “provider”, and the one who “brings home the bacon.” During the history of these television shows, even to this day, it is quite rare too see the roles of men and women reversed. The roles being placed on such a public force convinces viewers that this is how men and women should be, or it causes them to assume that these are the roles that men and women are meant to take. These roles have become so embedded into our society through television and other forms of media that it has prevented our society to bridge the gap of equality between men and women. Television shows need to diversify and establish equality between genders in order to break these harmful stereotypes for our young audiences.

The roles that television have provided for women consist of the stay at home mom, housewife, and trophy wife appearance. From the 1950’s to now, women are constantly pushed into these roles without showing any possibility of achieving more. These roles were created and stood out during the “golden age” of television. As mentioned in Mass Media in a Changing World, “Programs such as Father Knows Best and Ozzie and Harriet portrayed women as stereotypical housewives whose husbands made all the important decisions.” (Rodman 248) These shows were very prominent during the 1950’s and 60’s, along with shows such as I Love Lucy. These shows put these women in these roles because they never allowed them to strive for something greater, ultimately deeming them unable to achieve anything higher. These roles created a sense of normalcy for viewers, which eliminates any equal opportunity for women in these roles or in real life. It creates a false sense of reality because since it is such a strong force of media for our world today, it influences the audiences that these reflect the reality of women’s


abilities and contribution to society. The roles evolved from the “golden age” of television from 1948 to 1958, but remained in television shows into this day. Although women have gained a little more freedom with their roles this day in age, there are still subtle hints of inequality in women’s “traditional” roles in television shows. In common television shows today such as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, women are casted to carry strong roles with successful and strong character. However, despite what appears to be these strong roles, these women are still insubordinate to stronger, and more successful male characters. Therefore, despite the broadening of women’s roles, there still remains a underlying stigma that women are not as capable, successful, or as powerful as men.

Some common roles for males in television consist of being the provider, being highly educated, having white-collar jobs, and many other powerful roles. Although these may not to seem have a negative effect on the reputation of men, it doesn’t allow any room for men to achieve any roles that are considered “feminine,” such as staying at home with the kids or pursuing other less demanding jobs. These stereotypes that have been put onto men of society force them to fulfill these powerful positions that are demonstrated through these television shows. Not all of these jobs portrayed through these shows are meant for all men, but these shows reinforce these stereotypes convincing the viewers yet again is that this is how men “should be.”   It also reinforces the way that men should treat women. Most television shows execute the male role to maintain dominance over the female roles in most of the shows. Because this treatment is put on television, young men will grow up believing that this is the way that society is: men are dominant compared to women. The roles set up in television give viewers a false sense of reality and set them up to believe that there are no other options for these females or males except for what is displayed on the television screen.


What many don’t realize about the issue of gender roles is that is much more influential than it seems. As mentioned in the study conducted by Martha Lauzen, David Dozier, and Nora

Horan, “stereotypes offer generalizations ‘about people on the basis of their group membership’ often maintaining and reinforcing the in-group while subordinating members of out-group.” (Lauzen Dozier Horan 2008) This concept of stereotypes have been embedded into the media, and television is the most influential outlet for viewers to take in these stereotypes of genders. Also according to the study, “The researchers found that female characters performed ‘more interpersonal/relational actions’ (motivating, socializing, counseling, and other actions which develop worker relationships) and fewer decisional, political, and operational actions than do male characters.” (Lauzen Dozier Horan 2008) Although people may say this not an accurate reflection of real life, what goes unnoticed is that these depictions are an accurate reflection of how gender roles take play into real life. Studies such as this one reflect on the common gender themes in these prime time television shows. Another study conducted by Jack Glascock on “Gender Roles on Prime Time Network Television: Demographics and Behavior” analyzed the statistics that were taken to show the misrepresentation of men and women in television shows in the past few decades. One particular issue that he provided statistics on was the issue with representing women as sexual objects in television shows. Glascock reported that, “the largest age category for women was 20-34 years old (45-47%) while the largest for men was 30-49 years old (37-47%)…Davis (1990) also found females 4 to 5 times more likely to have red or blond hair than males and females to be more provocatively dressed (swimwear, tight clothing, etc.) than males.” (Glascock 2001) These reports not only reestablish the inequality of gender roles in prime television, but it also emphasizes that women are most commonly seen as these


sexual objects. Although the occupational aspect of gender equality in television has improved slightly over the years, the image of women being seen as these sexual objects is still a degrading

aspect of television and gender roles in today’s day and age, and it expands way beyond the screen of a television.

Despite the controversy with gender roles and occupation, how each gender is portrayed in prime time television is another issue as well. “The Liberal feminists believe that the media generally depicts women as wife, mother, daughter or as a sex object.” (Frendo 2013) As stated by Frendo, besides the family roles, females are often portrayed as sexual objects to men. Frendo uses Two and a Half Men as one major prime time show that involves a rich protagonist who is a womanizer for slim and beautiful women who at times, wear very revealing material. This one show is amongst dozens of prime time television that depicts women as sexual objects by making them wear revealing clothing, or being submissive towards the male characters sexually. With men, the issue of being sexually objectified is not as much of an issue with women because since males dominant most television shows, writers and producers will include what will appeal to the audiences. This continues pattern only sets up a negative and degrading image of women for the audiences (young and old) to see and learn from. The image of how women and men should “look,” is extremely influential in these prime time television shows because people, especially youth, spend so much time watching and looking up to these shows that they begin to take in the habits and morals that are taught in the show. Young girls who see the emphasis on how women are treated when they’re sexually appealing, will aspire to get the same kind of attention. For men, young boys will see how men should see women and also the physical shape they should be in to be considered masculine. Therefore, both young boys and girls will give in to what seems to be a “positive” influence on television, when it is actually doing harm in real life by creating unreic expectations.


Despite what many may say that we have reached a new era of “equality” between men and women, the issue is still very much alive. The issue still remains in a very similar way as racism, whereas the problem is way more subtle compared to decades ago when it was a constant battle. All we have to do is turn on the television to see the inequality of men and women on shows, and then reflect on the real life facts that accurately reflect on what is being shown on television. It’s a problem so subtle, but so influential and problematic to everyone who takes part because they don’t realize that these restrictions on men and women in television is actually happening beyond the screen. It’s especially influential on our youth because they grow up watching these prime time shows where they make these roles and stereotypes seem acceptable. Therefore, the youth grow up believing that what these television shows reflect is what is acceptable in real life. What we do from here with our television programs will determine how the oncoming generations interpret the concept of gender roles and equality, and how it affects our every day lives.

This particular reference explores female role

This journal article analyzes a few modern day series’ that reveal women’s unhappiness in the 21st century television. It analyzes the struggle that females have fought throughout history, especially through media, and the present day attributes of modern day sitcoms that abandon their own feministic ideals that women have constantly fought throughout history. It confronts feminism from a different approach that makes readers questions modern day televisions values of television and the women who take part in these shows that disregard feminism. Each of the three popular shows that the journal looks at all in some way continue to exaggerate the issue of feminism in television sitcoms. This article, although may contradict my thesis at first, will only help me emphasize that this problem is much larger than most of us anticipate when it comes to the “roles” and respect of women. It is great support to reiterate the severity of the problem.

In this journal, Glascock analyzes the gender stereotypes of television shows throughout the years. It also contains very crucial statistics to the roles of females compared to the roles of males to provide hard evidence to show the contrast of each gender. It goes over the comparison of each gender of different scenarios in television such as family life, unemployment, social life and love lives. It also goes over the basis of gender roles in television that reflect each gender which is appearance, and the statistics provide hard evidence to the dramatic differences that each gender has in television shows compared to one another. This journal is extremely beneficial to my research topic because it has a wide variety of years to compare olden times to now, and it uses raw statistics to show the actual difference in roles. These statistics will help everyone who isn’t as familiar on the topic have a better understanding of the point I’m trying to prove.

In this study, Lauzen, Dozier, and Horan all conduct a study that compares social roles with stereotypes and they differ and effect each other. It analyzes the stereotypes and roles for both male and females. It analyzes a series of prime time television shows in different years and the social roles that it demonstrates, and it also analyzes how having gender oriented writers effect the gender roles in the shows in the more modern years of television. This relates to my research topic because it analyzes gender roles in more of just a “black and white” description. It helps reveal the issue of gender roles and social roles throughout the years. The relationship between the writing staff and the casting reveals that gender roles and social roles in television plays a part that many never realized in the history of television. The relationship will add more depth to my analysis of these shows and the roles they’re executing.

The Internet

The Internet has become one of the greatest tools of mankind. It allows us to access so much information, learn about so many things, and do so many things just with a couple of clicks of the mouse. One aspect of the Internet that has become a huge part of society today is online shopping. Shopping online has become so established that there’s is even a day dedicated to online shopping: cyber Monday. The convenience of being able to shop online is hugely convenient, but can be extremely damaging. The convenience is so great, people are willing to avoid social interaction all together. One of my friends would rather order food, clothes, books, and many other things from home rather than interacting in stores in public. Going out in public can be frustrating, however giving into online shopping all of the time can impair ones ability to meet new people and overall to communicate throughout society efficiently.

In 2012, my favorite movie that came out was The Vow. I enjoyed this movie because it really demonstrated the strength of love and all that it can overcome. It truly exposed the powers that comes with love. My all time favorite movie is The Notebook, yet another love story. This movie is my all time favorite because I’m in love with the era that it embodies (the 1950’s), and it encourages people to follow what they’re passionate about. Passion is what makes life so enjoyable whether it be for something or someone. Both of these movies I saw when they come out on DVD because I don’t always have the time to make it to the movies. It is safe to say that I’am a sucker for love stories.

Magazine Ideas

I’m personally a huge fan of Pinterest, which is a website that involves “pinning” your own personal interests onto boards to refer back to later. I love this concept because everyone can contribute different recipes, craft ideas, and many other ideas for many other things. I would love to come up with a magazine called “Share it,” which is a magazine that takes ideas from the readers and publishes it for everyone around the world to see. Submissions wold be sent online, and would be put into the next subscription. The magazine would be broken up into different categories such as recipes, wedding ideas, crafts, etc. The point is to provide helpful and useful tips or ideas in person, and to create community through a reader organized magazine to reflect different ideas around the world.

Name: Share it

Concept: The content of the magazine is created and contributed to by the readers, not the company. It provides a sense of community to have everyone contributing to this one specific issue and collaborating with everyone around the world.

Demographics – Issues for every age and gender; no racaial or cultural restrictions; world-wide magazine and submissions

Competitors – This magazine is contributed by the people world wide; it consists of the common beliefs or ideas that many think would only happen to them.

Advertisers – Apple, Samsung, Target, Starbucks, and Facebook.

Articles – Articles would depend on the issue (kids, teen, men, women, etc.) Clothing, health, music, food, and social media. Positive articles that reflet community

Cover – The cover would be directed toward the genre of the issue, and would have a collage theme of some of the submissions for that issue with SHARE IT in bold in the middle and the pictures surrouding it.

The Books that Impacted Me

I’ve read a lot of books throughout the years I’ve been in school. One book that has an impact on me is the Fault in Our Stars. This book is about a young couple who both suffer from cancer and learn to love and grow with each other beyond this physical setback. This book was an inspiration for me because it taught me that life you live should only be for yourself, and not for anyone else. You should do what makes you happy, and not what makes everyone else happy. I’m known as a people pleaser so this is a difficult task for me. This book was good also because it really made me think about how important it is to not take life for granted. Another book that has had an impact on me is The Secret Life of Bee’s. Although this book is more of a early high school levelednreading, it is about a girl who is stuck in the house of an abusive, angry father, and the memory of her mother. She runs way to live with black folk and this story took place in the time where racism was first developing in our country. This story inspired me because it taught me to never let anyone else change how I think of people, and to follow what I believe in despite what society may think about it. It was also good because it made me realize how much of an issue racis still is today. Another book(s) that inspired me were the Harry Potter books. Despite the fact it’s fiction and is about a boy with magical powers and survived a killing from a dark sorcerer, it had a lot of symbollic messages that can be applied to real life. These books inspired me to never run away from the problems I may be having, and to be brave and strong when dealing with something challenging. It is easy to get discouraged from the obstacles life hands us, however these books have shown me that no matter what it will all be okay.

Media Autobiography

I’ve grown up in a time where media and mass media have expanded tremendously. From newspapers, to books, to the internet, to movies, our media is expanding and evolving day after day. Each form of media has had a different impact on my life. One type of media that has had an influence on my life are books. Although I don’t read to often due to school, whenever I do get lost in a story it allows me to forget about the stresses of reality and can enjoy the art of amazing stories. The next form of media is newspapers. I have not really had any interaction with newspapers throughout my life. I mainly only worried about purchasing or reading newspapers was if there was a big event or occurance that had just happened. The next form of media is magazines. I typically only care for magazines if I’m waiting in a doctor’s/dentist’s office, or if I’m relaxing at a nail salon or just relaxing. I definitely enjoy magazines for the gossip – it is oddly addicting! With recordings, I tend to only interact with that when I’m attending an event and I record a song at a concert, or part of a sports event. That way, I can look back and reminise on the memories I made. I interact with the radio on a daily basis. Every time I get into my car and drive somewhere, I listen to the radio for traffic updates, or just to enjoy good music while driving. I tend to use television on a daily basis as well. I tend to use it when I study because i like studying with background noise. Television, although distracting at times, helps provoke thought while I work on my homework. The last form of media is the internet. This is probably my biggest source in my everyday life. I’m constantly i need of it for research and email access. I also use it for rereational purposes such as social media, movies, music, and games. The sources of media I use daily are the ones I definitely enjoy the most for conveience, and accessability. I’m in-between majors of psychology and public relations. I enjoy imteracting and helping humans and interacting through the media. No matter which major I choose, I plan on transferring to San Jose State, Chico State, or San Francisco State.
